1886年、横浜明治屋に日本初のクリスマスツリーが、この日に飾られました。そしてこのクリスマスツリーは、横浜の外国人船員のためのものだといわれています。

キリスト教では、12月25日の4週前の日曜日～12月24日のクリスマスイブまでを、キリスト降臨までの準備期間で「待降節の期間」とされます。そして、この最初の日曜日にクリスマスツリーの飾り付けを始める人たちが多いそうです。その飾られたツリーは、年をまたいで1月6日の公現祭（十二夜）まで飾られるそうです。ちなみに公現祭は、「東方の三博士」がイエス・キリストの誕生を祝福した日であり、キリスト教の大切な日です。

12月になると、クリスマスが意識され全国各地で、木や建物に電飾が付けられ幻想的なイルミネーションが夜に電灯され始めます。キリスト教には直接関わりはないですが、何故かこの時期はときめきますよね。
